Wednesday Weekly Roundup

Last week I wrote 15K, most of which were on a new novella that may or may not spark a new series while I took a break from my futuristic story. Two days had no writing at all, but a cold kept me at home on Sunday when I was supposed to go out, so I managed to finish that story.

Half of one of the non-writing days was spent at the small and medium publishers fair here in Rome. A friend of mine had a thriller out, and I talked to the owner of Future Fiction about a project. You should check out what he does, with multi-lingual books and even comics. And if you’re curious about Italian sci-fi, he published an anthology (link to Amazon.com).

I found this video of the world’s first artificial wombs and it made me think of my Rainbow Towns. The series in question is, of course, Future Earth Chronicles.

Tomorrow is the start of Smashwords End of the Year Sale. My books are all 50% off (except the ones that would become free, that’s just a couple of them). D2D announced the distribution to the Smashwords store, but when I enquired, they told me if would create a second profile, since I already have a Smashwords account, so I’ll just wait until the merging is final to send back the books to Smashwords.

So only some of my books are discounted until the end of the year, and only in the Smashwords store, where I’m sure you can find plenty of other deals. And if you’re only on D2D, add your books to the sale and see how it goes! 🙂

That’s all for now… have a great week!

SALE! Last days, then it’s gone forever! Grab it now!

Seductive Female thief running away over the rooftops

And the yearly wordcount is over 300K, but I’ll need to slow down in August to revise a couple of things. I should be able to catch up in September, though! 🙂

I found another publisher open to novella submissions, and I’m sharing it here in case you have a festive-themed novella. I might send them something for the advance notice novella series. And I’ll soon send something to Tor as well. Oh, and since I’m on a submission-call sharing spree, see if you have anything for Quoth the Raven celebrating the works of Edgar Allan Poe! 🙂

Now, if you’re just starting, you might have to confront the 8 fears that hold writers back from publishing their books. But when it comes to cover art, please follow the Indie Author’s guide to hiring a cover artist! 🙂 I’m a hobbyist artist, I’ll try to look for a typograpy and graphics workshop in my area to get even better.

Maybe one day I’ll make covers for other people as well! 😉 Learning with my own, though, since this year I started doing composite of stock photos (either from Depositphoto or Neostock)… and I’m currently having fun in spite of a Photoshop 7.0 and very limited skills, LOL!

If you want to do it too, please read the Indie Author’s guide to stock photography! 🙂

Our man David Gaughran is still on Amazon’s back. I haven’t managed to read Amazon Decoded yet, but here’s how to (ethically) hack Amazon categories. I’m not sure I tried to apply this to my historical novel, for example. Well, I did put the keywords but they don’t come out in the search, so… I guess next step should be writing to KDP support? Meh.

And in case you missed the cocky-gate, here’s a good summary. And there’s someone else trying to trademark Dragon Slayer as well… sigh. Glad there’s CockyBot to look after that mess! 🙂

OH, SALES SALES SALES! On DriveThruFiction and DriveThruComics everything from Unicorn Productions is 25% off! 😀

Aaaand… we have a paperback for Sci-fi Stories Space Opera Mashup. So if you’re up for a dead tree book, it’s available too. For all four anthologies! 🙂

That’s all for today… have a great week!

Sunday Surprise

Two more days and the anthology Nightly Bites will go live… have you pre-ordered it yet?

If you’re on Facebook, the anthology page is publishing the authors’ bios every few days… We already had David Miller and Russ Crossley, and more are coming in the next few weeks, so you can start knowing these wonderful authors who trusted me with their stories! 🙂

And it’s not all! The Vampires of the World bundle will go on sale on the same date! Check your calendars, DECEMBER 19, for these great deals… and more! Stay tuned… Have a great Sunday! 😀

Busy week wrapping up projects and attending the small and medium publishers fair here in Rome also to figure out if I can get ISBNs without being officially a publisher. I may need a few for future projects and I may end up buying them in bulk abroad if the Italian ISBN agency gets on my nerves once again. Sigh.

November wordcount ended up 28000words. Not much, so I’m assuming I won’t hit that 500K goal this year either, but well… my writing process has changed through the years and I’m experimenting more. I’m suddenly more dynamic than ever, LOL!

As promised, here’s the first box set – the complete Chronicles of the Varian Empire. Another is on the way, so if you haven’t tried Silvery Earth yet, you might want to taste it with these very cheap box sets. All will be at 4.99$.

If you prefer multi-author bundles to single author box sets, there’s still this long list… and yes, the First Glimpse bundle is still out there, but it will be gone by the end of the month, so grab it now! 😉

Now, in case you missed it and want to try it, the challenge is on for the third time – either write 30 stories in 60 days or three novels in three months. As you know, I did the first novel challenge and I was considering doing the third short story challenge, but I’m taking Techie Bro and Dear Nephew to London for the latter’s birthday, so I will simply “just do it on your own and play along, test to see if you can do it without me reading your stories.”

Unless someone wants to do the challenge with me, I’ll simply report here every week if I have written a story or not. So starting January 1st, 30 stories in 60 days. Possibly shorts so I can send them off. I have already a short list of stories to write that got postponed, so January is as good as any to write them all down and then go back to longer works! 🙂

This is also to avoid burnout. If you read Kris Rusch’s post on burnout and the Indie Writer, you’ll see what I mean. Since I never was one of those great sellers, I’m still here, still writing and not obsessing with marketing.

The key really isn’t avoiding burnout. The key to surviving as a writer is learning how to sustain a career.

And that’s true not just for indie writers, but traditionally published writers as well. Some of the demands traditional publishers put on their bestselling writers make the actual writing impossible.

Writers in traditional settings have to learn how to say no.

Writers in an indie setting have to figure out their priorities.

And that’s what I want, a career. So next year I’ll be writing more than this year (hopefully), hit that 500K goal (hopefully) and publish whatever I finish without bothering with regular deadlines. Of course the 4th vampires through the centuries novel will come out Nov.2 and the novella May 2, but besides that, it’s all open and I have a lot of exciting projects in mind (like… Post-Apocalypse Chronicles sequels…)! 😉

Writerly link: mobile vs.desktop: target the right device for readers in your genre. I’m mostly in the desktop category, apparently… If I decide to do a BookBub in the future, I’ll try to keep this in mind! Don’t you like all those reports, like Author Earnings (which I decided to fill again this year. Just head to the Surveys page)? 😉

Last bit of news: Axelle, Wanderer is discounted on Kobo only! I sumbitted another title, so stay tuned.  Or go to the publisher’s page! 😉 Have a great week! 🙂

Sunday Surprise part 2

Since I can’t reblog the publisher’s posts and the post itself missed its schedule, I’m copy-pasting the most important part of that post:

For the month of October, Honorable Assassin will have temporary sales. Find it at 99c between Oct.6 and Oct.9 on all retailers.

So get it now, you have until tomorrow to use the sale! Read the whole post.

Random Friday

Bundles, glorious bundles… Vampires of the World is available for pre-order as is Mythic Tales. Both have one of mine (erm… 2 in the first case…) in the lot.

In the vampires bundle you have Rajveer and Kaylyn (what else? 😉 ) and in Mythic Tales, there’s Beautiful, the sleeping prince with a puppy disposition awakened by the stray cat adventurer who happened to kiss him awake.

I have received the proofs of Shashank and Honorable Assassins, and one I’m going to redo it – slightly reformatted the bonus stories. As soon as I get the new proof, I’ll probably send the book live so I can order a copy for the cover artist.

On totally unrelated subject, I watched the DVD of John Wick Chapter 2 and the deleted scenes… one of them was shot in EUR, next to the office! How did I miss them? Drat! Anyway, it was nice to watch it again with its mix of Italian and English! 🙂

Now I can wait for Chapter 3… along with Da Other Muse’s movies if he decides to get back to work and stop modeling and endorsing products and making training programs and all that other stuff that has nothing to do with acting… 😉

Oh, and the sale has begun… on all retailers! 99c/99p only until Sunday! 🙂 Have a great weekend!

Happiness is…
