Writer Wednesday

SM3_resizeSo… it’s out! Star Minds book 3 is finally live on all e-book platforms I know of – Kobo being the slowest to let a title go live. Anyway, April will be Star Minds month for me, and in fact I changed my Facebook cover to match. In May I shall put back the one that says “Fantasy Author”. I’ll be hopping around blogs this month, but I’ll let you know where and when as time approaches. I also made a banner for the series, I’ll add it at the end of the post.

And then I’ll be writing those snippets. Can’t let them go, LOL! Not sure if I should write in chronological order or simply what fancies me at the moment. I know that a couple of short stories are very clear in my mind, others are just an idea I need to brew. So maybe I’ll start with the ones I already “know” (because I’ve seen them unfold in my head) and in the meantime think about the others.

As tomorrow I’ll be off to Torino Comics, I have plenty of time to program and brainstorm with myself. I won’t bring any writing and I hope to catch up on some reading on the train rides. Although I really look forward to reading… Star Minds in as few sittings as I can, LOL! Yeah, I write what I want to read, so sometimes I need to go back to my favorite author – me! πŸ˜€

Coupons have gone out to people who commented on Sunday. I expected at least 7 comments, as 7 people requested the giveaway, but well… that’s why I don’t do many giveaways in the first place. I even tried the Facebook Offer – but it doesn’t really work for a giveaway, I didn’t know what to put on the “budget” field. Anyone has done it and succeeded? I’m assuming it’s paid advertising on Facebook, and I’m not shelling any $ for that – I’d rather pay my beloved editors instead! πŸ˜‰

Oh, and blame it on Rohan if I went back to Windows Movie Maker and did another book trailer – it’s just another procrastination technique for a lazy Sunday night! πŸ˜‰ Love these guys so much, I did the Star Minds book trailer – after a whole year of not doing any! All the other are from 2011, I did none last year… well, there you have it, a new book trailer… enjoy! πŸ™‚

Last Thursday I arrived home and found my first Amazon check waiting for me. I haven’t cashed it yet, as I want to parade it a little longer – won’t buy my way out of DayJob, but at least I can show everybody that I am earning something and this is not a hobby, but my real work! πŸ™‚ The hundred bucks or so add up to the similar amount I made on Smashwords last year… took me slightly longer to get them from Amazon! πŸ™‚

Speaking of Smashwords, my best seller (by B.G.Hope) wasn’t shipped to Apple since August. It was in the premium catalog, but never went to them (to the other distributors yes). So I wrote to ask them what was up, and after 4 days someone told me it might be because there’s a stupid error at some point. And of course at that point I had to redo the cover because it was too small… Grr.

Not to mention how late SW is in paying whatever sells on the other retailers (not much, but still…), so I am trying a brand new distributor. Draft2Digital is explained here and so far I’ve heard only good things about them. I had noticed Amazon taking away the tags to our books, and I feel Smashwords can’t hold the momentum – except for those great coupon thingies. So I decided to experiment with… well, Star Minds, what else? πŸ˜‰Β D2D doesn’t have a shop, but in less than 24hours I got an e-mail saying all 3 titles are live on B&N (withouth the wait for the premium distribution – yes, even Slave Traders!). We’ll see if the e-pub passes Apple’s test and get there almost as fast, and then I shall slowly upload also the other titles (next week), hoping they’ll show up in the Apple i-bookstore faster and better…

Anyhow, with all these things going on, I didn’t have much time to check blogs, so no links this week. Except to this:

Ben Wolverton, age 16, was in a tragic long-boarding accident on Wednesday the 4th, 2013. He suffers from severe brain trauma, a cracked skull, broken pelvis and tail bone, burnt knees, bruised lungs, broken ear drums, road rash, pneumonia, and is currently in a coma. His family has no insurance. Ben is the son of author David Farland, whose books have won multiple awards, and who is widely known as a mentor to many prominent authors, such as Brandon Sanderson, Stephenie Meyer, and Brandon Mull. Costs for… Ben’s treatment are expected to rise above $1,000,0000. To help raise money for Ben, we are having a book bomb (focused on Nightingale and Million Dollar Outlines) on behalf of Ben.
Go to the Facebook event and join in or donate for Ben’s recovery. He might become as goog a writer as his father, so here’s to his recovery and a healthy long life. And if you’re a beginning writer, you might want to attend a few of David Farland’s classes – although who knows when the next will be. Dave is a great teacher and a great writer, so subscribe to his daily kicks if you haven’t already!

The Aftermath

Sooo… Indie Publishing week ended yesterday night with map-making, uploading trailer and working on cover. And no web page. I decided that this blog will be enough for now. I already post daily, a web-page would be a duplicate. So I readjusted the blog (in case you didn’t notice) with all the details to be found:Β  book covers, book trailer, and maps – a link for the e-book that don’t really support JPG.If I google my (pen) name, my Facebook page comes first, then GoodReads, then blog posts (random), but the link to this blog is on both Facebook and GoodReads anyway, so I shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Lulu has sent the print copy (with temporary cover and map, but it will be only for me) and I’m waiting to see it, but April 1st I’ll upload Air on Smashwords – and as it’s a Friday, another Love-story with… post will be postponed (for a good reason). I’ll probably upload it also on Kindle, I’ve done it with Jessamine and it’s here, although very expensive! I put the same list price as Smashwords, so I don’t know why they charge more. So if you have a Kindle, buy it on Smashwords anyway! πŸ˜‰ I did the double upload, as since January from Smashwords it hadn’t made it into Amazon, so I thought I’d accelerate the process…

I also asked my friend the map-maker for help in having the title coming out a little better, so here’s the new cover:

And the brand new map – rivers in black mean they’re borders, the others are not… And I cut the sea monster because he used a sheet too big for my scanner! πŸ˜‰

Aaaand… the book trailer!

Now I better go check the guidelines, as I’ve been welcome among the GoodReads authors… It’s not over yet… πŸ˜€

New Year

Even if most bloggers seem to be still on Holiday hiatus, I believe the Holidays are over for most of the world (in Italy the official end is Jan 6, so I still have the rest of the week… to keep ignoring them! ;-)). The snow on WordPress will soon be over and did you guys get that friendly e-mail from the Team WordPress.com + Stats Helper Monkeys? I didn’t, not for this blog. Maybe I update it too often, and I drove the Stats Helper Monkeys crazy in trying to summarize it! I can tell you that I almost reached 10.000 hits (and when I do, I will celebrate with a giveaway), have 434 posts (but this includes also the posts since the opening of this blog end of September 2009…) and the busiest day was last June with 170 views. The rest I can’t figure out without help, and if the WordPress Monkeys couldn’t do it, neither do I! Maybe they sent it only to one e-mail per author… and to the blogs that update less regularly?

By the way, don’t forget the challenge at WordPress. Post a day or post a week, as you feel. I’m already posting daily (except on Sundays), so I’ll be just adding this little tag to all posts for the rest of the year. I’m not subscribing to the daily prompt, as I don’t need inspiration for daily posts, but you might want to do it. Feel free to take as much of the challenge as you wish! πŸ˜‰

Some readers are not WordPress Bloggers, so they probably don’t care about any of this, so let’s move on! πŸ˜‰ How were your holidays?

Personally, I didn’t feel them much. I don’t have breaks at work for Christmas (I even had to work extra hours on Dec.30…) and the Holidays being on a weekend it didn’t change much in my routine.

working on SKYBAND during the Holidays

I spent a creative New Year’s Eve at home, working on Jessamine (I came up with a brand new myth that I plan to incorporate in the novelette, but without explaining it – although it is sort of explained in SKYBAND which happens a century later, so I had to edit that one too) and SKYBAND (drawing chapter 5 and working on the trailer – I won’t post it until I’m ready with the new chapter, though). I did the trailer for Happiness is… first thing in the morning of January 1st. I’m already thinking about the Air book trailer, and even got a pencil of the cover from my illustrator friend.

I still have a lot of work to do, and will wrap it up this week, so next week I can start working on the historical novel. I’m also considering a trip to Lincoln for both research and… a book trailer! (yeah, I’ve got this new addiction, haha!) Because Stanburg Castle is supposed to be somewhere near Lincoln, I thought I could visit the area.Β  I could bring my medieval costume and ask my Brit teacher to use my video camera for a short trailer, where I’d add pictures of the other places visited by my knight (Little Brittany, Palestine), and ask him to do the voice over as if the knight, now old, remembers his life… gee, told ya I was being creative!

So I’m ready to carry that creative torch for the rest of the year. Lots of projects should come out and I won’t let anybody stop me anymore. I’m going to conquer the world, mwhahahaha! (that was my evil laugh)

I sure hope most of my friends will follow. I know I should socialize a lot more, but my real life friends seem to have lost their dreams, even the creative ones (except the illustrator for my covers), so I’m not too keen on spending time with them. I mean, when you tell them “I’m working on this and this” and they stare at you blankly with a balloon over their head saying “Why doesn’t she get a husband?” it’s not really worth to call them friends anymore. OK, acquaintances. But hey, we used to have the same dreams! We met at comicons! What happened to you guys? Sometimes I really want to scream.

But I just shut up and retreat in my own little creative house and keep going. I’m old enough to know what I want and how I want it and I thank technology for allowing me to do it my own way.

I wish you all a wonderful, creative 2011, and don’t forget to follow your dreams!
