Wednesday Weekly Roundup

Last week I wrote a little over 12K, and not because I had 2 extra mornings, since those extra mornings were not for writing, unfortunately. So I’ve dived into Future Earth Chronicles Book 6 and wrote whatever happened before the protagonist met the main characters of the first story arc. I did have some fun revisiting Rainbow Towns and a future North America mostly back in the hands of the First Nations – mostly.

ebook cover "Cop" (Star Minds Lone Wolves)I published another title even though nobody will buy it right now, probably. But then, it’s not as if I had dozens of rabid readers who look forward to my next book, LOL! So I’ll continue with my scheduled publishing every two weeks for the rest of the year, no matter how this goes.

I am now going to dive back into the Star Minds Universe and wrap up both the Lone Wolves and the rest of it. So now you have Star Minds Lone Wolves – Cop, in two weeks Assassin, two more weeks Spacer, then the rest of the Team‘s missions for another three ebooks, which will take us to the end of May. In June and July I’ll publish Star Minds Interregnum Volume 2 and some box sets, so stay tuned! 🙂

Also, I enrolled in the Authors Give Back sale on Smashwords. Almost thirty titles discounted 30% or 60%. Including Future Earth Chronicles, in case you wanted to try it – Book 1 is always at 99c, but now you can grab the other 4 at 1.20$each. Full list of my discounted titles on the publisher’s site. The sale goes on until April 20.

Considering the world-wide troubles, I won’t be doing any paperbacks just yet. I canceled the order for my new Kindle since they hadn’t sent it out yet, and I managed to get my parcels from the post office Monday morning before going to work. So, you better read e-books if you want. Or listen to audio. I still have 14 giveaway codes for Otherside from Findaway Voices, again only valid in US, CA and AU.

Research material

Please have a look at the Cave Creek Kickstarter if you haven’t already! I got my research books (see above), and will be writing for this… Help us reach the next streetch goal – and there are already 2 short stories for backers! 😀 Ebooks, so downloadable at any time (still saving mine to a special folder for when I’ll get a new Kindle) – this campaign closes really soon, probably hours from the time this goes live, so hurry! 😀

And if you’re on Facebook and want only readers’ news, you can now join my Street Team group, finally renamed after the poll I ran what? One month ago? Eh. Got busy, or better, distracted. I should probably add that link at the end of my books, for whoever is still on Facebook. Or you can subscribe to the publisher’s page, it’s not updated as regularly as this blog! 😉 Only for new releases or sales or other special events. So, suggested follow for readers is that one – if you’re not on Facebook or don’t follow me on Author Central, Goodreads or Bookbub, that is.

And while we wait for this to pass and for the new normal, let’s all play the Waiting Game. Here’s to hoping that this mess will bring earlier the Universal Basic Income… Have a great week! 🙂

Wednesday Weekly Roundup

Aaand… HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🙂

Last week I wrote over 14K and a couple of new shorts I will probably send out soon (at least one of them). So to wrap it all up – in 2019 I wrote 530K words, and published 29 titles (not all in English, mind you, but still…).

I start the new year with 170 titles out after the cleaning of the past 4 months, 45 of which are in Italian with a couple enrolled in KU, which seems to work for that language. Doesn’t work for me in English, but well… I might experiment some more this year.

And in the above I’m not counting the curated anthologies or other anthologies I’m in, or even the bundles, just what came out under the Unicorn Productions banner. And I still have to prepare a few paperbacks of the titles that came out in 2019. I know, I fell behind, sorry… with catch up! 🙂

If you’re just starting in the world of Indie Publishing, challenge yourself and publish a book a month for a year. I have done it (25 titles per year since 2011), and sending the paperback to the US is an expense I’d rather not have. But I’ll definitely publish at least 12 titles in 2020. Possibly nothing in the first two months (my editor is busy and I won’t have anything proofread until the end of February) but then I’ll catch up after the Anthology Workshop. Promise.

And here we have a neat podcast (with transcript, which is what I prefer): 2009-2019: Reflections on a decade of self-publishing. I started in 2011, lived through the KU disruption remaining wide and still don’t want to pay for advertising, so that’s probably why my books sink into blackholes of forgetfulness.

I did two new things last year, though. Audio books and going to Overdrive – via D2D, which is just as well, since Kobo is selling Overdrive to someone else, so if I had gone through the KWL dashboard, I would have to do it again. As for Audio books, listen to Joanna Penn!

So a big tip everyone, first of all, go and request your favorite indie books into your library, local libraries, but also tell your readers to request their favorite books in libraries. So I think the more we can get the word out, the more that’s going to help.

And if you’re in one of the countries supported by Findaway Codes (US, CA, AU) – I still have some to giveaway for Otherside. The other audio books you can ask your libraries are the following Silvery Earth novellas: Firebird and The Hooded Man. The latter received a Honorable Mention at Writers of the Future back in 2014… Go check them, they’re also on Audible and everywhere else they sell audio! 🙂

I might explore other audio options this year – checked Descript.com but haven’t tried it yet – and might try some translations, although literary translations aren’t the easiest to do. I know, I tried them and spent two weeks on a short story. My favorite Italian writer, Brunella Gasperini, translated Stephen King’s Carrie, but she was also a writer and a journalist, so I’m pretty sure she did an excellent job! 😉

If you’re up for a little poll, go vote here. Novels, short stories, authors, artists, publishers, anything. You have a few more days to vote. The end of the year also saw the implosion of the RWA… glad I don’t write romance, but then, I’m not American either, LOL!

And now onward to the next decade… have a great week! 🙂

Writer Wednesday

Last week I managed my 10K by Thursday since I had to get on a train on Friday. And in Milan I wrote a few more strips for the webcomic, so Sunday afternoon I typed them. Since Feb.28, it’s another 700 words! 😉 I have drawn all the panels, but now I need to clean them, color them, and put the lettering.

I’m exploring venues where to put them, probably Tapas, SmackJeeves and Patreon – which will mean adding a level and make another weekly post, whenever I’m ready to release the Silvery Earth Kids to the world! 😉 At Cartoomics I asked for advice on webcomics and of course bought a few things – all this in barely two hours! 😀

If you’re a newer writer, check out this article on self-rejection. Last week I had the Day of Rejections, with 3 coming into my inbox – one, personalized, in the morning and two in the evening. Glittership was very fast (2 days since submission), Amazing Stories 1 month and the personalized one was long overdue, but they were nice in their rejection.

Which doesn’t mean I’m going to rewrite that story, mind you! 😉 I still have two out and plan to submit another when the market opens on the 21st, then we’ll see. I might have to postpone the 30-stories-in-60 days, like I said! 😉

Currently I’m gathering stories for another anthology and yesterday I uploaded Future Earth Chronicles Book 5 for pre-order everywhere. In less than a month the first cycle will be complete. I hope the dozen people who downloaded Book 1 from Smashwords or the other dozen who got it from Kobo promos will end up buying the rest of the series. I’m quite proud of it, and hopefully they’ll like it too! 😉

I would like to thank the person who got a book at full price during the Read an eBook Week on Smashwords. And hope the half-dozen who got the other freebie will then go on to read the rest of the series. It’s probably the last time I participate in a site-wide sale, though.

Findaway Voices is prepping production on the two male-narrated audiobooks and hopefully the first will be ready soon. I’ll be editing and formatting another title for next weekend and then back to writing… Have a great week! 🙂

Sunday Surprise

Hi guys,
I’m Samantha and I come from another world – the original, old Silvery Earth, where people are immortal and never grow up. When I’m not switching bodies at will, I travel to other universes, especially books or movies. That’s how I met Rajveer the vampire, for example!
So, I’m taking over the interviews on this blog! And here I am, meeting people from other books/universes/whatever!
Sooo, what do we have here today? Hello, little one! Tell me a little about yourself

My name is Jenks, and I’m a degu.

Cool! *stares at reader* What? I speak degu, so? *turns back to Jenks* Describe your appearance in ten words or less.

A small and furry brown rodent.

What is the biggest challenge you face in the story?

In the first book, understanding and dealing with the thing the human caretakers call “the great degu round-up” and escaping from the sandless sandbath. In the second story, figuring out who this Santa Paws guy is, and staying awake long enough to spot him.

Wow. Small hero with big challenges! Do you have a family? Tell me about them.

I have three brothers. Their names are Jacob, Jasper, and Joshua. Yep, all “J” names here. We live in the same cage, and have human caretakers to take care of things like providing food and water. We fight a little sometimes, but we’re really close; I love my brothers.

Well, me and my twin are Samantha and Sonia, so I know where you come from… Please give me an interesting and unusual fact about yourself.

For those who don’t know: A degu is a type of rodent that looks a little like a rat with a furry tail, but is actually closely related to guinea pigs. We have very specific care needs, among them the need for regular sand baths – like chinchillas – and strict dietary requirements due to being at high risk of things like diabetes.

***~~~***

The Degu Days Duo is a two book series that tells the stories of two different days in the life of a group of four degus – told from their point of view. The same degus have also inspired two stand alone stories: “How To Trust Your Human” which is the story of one degu’s attempts at learning to trust again after losing his three brothers, and “Degu’s Day Out” which is the misadventure of a degu who finally gains the freedom he’s longed for so sets off to explore the world beyond the cage bars.

You can read all four of them as eBooks or paperbacks, and now – thanks to narrator James Watkins – you can also listen to them in audio.

Regardless of the format you’d prefer, here are the main places where you can buy the books:

When she remembers to spend some time in the real world, it’s mostly to spend time with her hubby and pets, though sometimes to indulge in other interests that capture her attention from time to time. To date she has published 8 poetry books and more than 40 children’s books, with more planned for the near future. She’s also contributed a story to the sci-fi and fantasy anthology Wyrd Worlds II.

Sunday Surprise

Hi guys,

I’m Samantha and I come from another world – the original, old Silvery Earth, where people are immortal and never grow up. When I’m not iswitching bodies at will, I travel to other universes, especially books or movies. That’s how I met Rajveer the vampire, for example!

So, I’m taking over the interviews on this blog! And here I am, meeting people from other books/universes/whatever! And this time we have someone who is NOT from the head of that silly woman who thinks she’s writing ME. Hello, there… Tell me a little about yourself

My name is Toby, and I’m six years old.

Oh, cool, haven’t met many children yet! Describe your appearance in ten words or less.

I’m a little boy with dark hair.

Where do you live?

I live in a house, but I don’t know where it is. We have a big garden, and the house has enough rooms that I don’t have to share my bedroom with my big brother – like some little boys do.

I know what you mean! *roll eyes* I have a twin sister! What is the biggest challenge you face in the story?

All kinds. My eyes don’t work any more, and it’s hard – and sometimes scary – learning how to do things now I can’t see. Sometimes I feel left out too, because it’s hard for me to do some of the things I could do when my eyes still worked. I feel sad sometimes too, because sometimes people laugh at me – or get mad at me – for things that aren’t my fault, and that wouldn’t happen if I wasn’t blind now. I’m learning how to do things with broken eyes, but it’s not easy, and sometimes I wish my eyes still worked.

People are often stupid. Try to ignore them. *grabs his hand and pats it* Do you have a family? Tell me about them.

There’s my Mother and Father. I also have a big brother named Jake, and a little sister named Emma. I used to play with Jake all the time, but I can’t play all the games he does now I can’t see any more. We have a dog named Max too. He’s a Collie, so he’s big and hairy.

Well, you have a nice family! Please give me an interesting and unusual fact about yourself.

The main thing you need to know about me is that I went blind not too long ago. I have something called Glaucoma, and it made it so my eyes don’t work any more. It’s not fair, because Jake’s eyes still work, and so do all the rest of my family’s eyes. But not mine.

It is indeed unfair… I wish you all the best in your “new” life, I’m sure you can become a superhero in spite of your limitations!

About the books Toby stars in:

The Toby’s Tales series is a five book series that follows a little boy named Toby’s efforts to adjust after sight loss. It was written as a way to show those in similar situations that they aren’t alone in their fears and frustrations, while also being tools to educate sighted people – mainly children, but adults too – about the daily struggles faced by blind people, and how they overcome them.

The books were written by Victoria Zigler following her own sight loss. They’re available in multiple eBook formats, in paperback, and now in audio – read by Joseph A. Batzel.

About the author:
Victoria Zigler is a blind poet and children’s author who was born and raised in the Black Mountains of Wales, UK, and is now living on the South-East coast of England, UK. Victoria – or Tori, if you prefer – has been writing since she knew how, has a very vivid imagination, and spends a lot of time in fictional worlds; some created by her, others created by other authors.

Writer Wednesday

Aaand… here we go!

Star Minds Next Generation

It’s available for pre-order on all retailers and will come out soon! So you’ll have both fantasy and sci-fi for your summer reading! 😉 I’m very happy with the authors in this bundle – this time I have met most of them personally.

You have a great variety – from my Goodreads friends Steph Bennion and Ubiquitous Bubba, who were interviewed on this blog for Wyrd Worlds, some workshop buddies I met on the Oregon Coast (Rebecca Bates, Michael Lucas, Russ Crossley, Blaze Ward, Robert Jeschonek), to the man who made us meet (Dean Wesley Smith – the kind of writer I want to be when I grow up) and a few more that I found browsing the awesome content marketplace at BundleRabbit.

So I’m still riding the fantasy bundle, reading all the other books, and already I’m starting a new journey, a trek to the stars with these wonderful fellows. I made a book trailer for it and it will come out on Independence Day (which, by the way, is the birthday of my Australian friend, maybe she’d like one as a gift? 😉 ), so stay tuned…

The indie community is really great. Because there’s no such thing as a self-published author – that’s so 20th century thinking! 😉 And also this small post on negotiation is a good way to remind us that traditional publishing is still tricky. And if we want to tackle the audio market independently it’s getting easier every year. Now Draft2Digital offers audiobooks as an alternative to ACX…

It’s really a great time to be an author. Final wordcount for this month in July, but know that I finished and sent out the first novel of the challenge. Onward to the vampires novel that must be finished by the end of July… have a great week! 🙂

books vs. e-books

This thought comes from the reading of Uninvoked on-line novel. In fact I even put a poll on my Italian blog after the latest book fair (last December) about your reading preferences: on screen, on paper, audio-books? I had only four votes there, so I’m not repeating it here, but what are your preferences?

Personally, I get distracted when someone reads aloud, thus no e-books, thank you. I’d rather listen to music when I travel, instead of people talking. As I mentioned before, the screen kills my pretty blue eyes (in spite of the glasses), thus I’m all for paper and printed stuff. I know it’s not very ecological, but for me it’s the only way to truly enjoy reading.

Maybe it’s because I also read many comic-books (I know those can be found online as well, but again, I prefer the printed version), and my house is full of bookshelves holding different sorts of books, but I’m sort of attached to those bundles of paper. I’ve found many interesting things on the net as well, when researching or simply web-browsing, but I had to print them out to actually enjoy them – and highlight some passages when I was researching for further consultation. Gee, I finished school 25 years ago, seems like I’m back on those school books!

Maybe in the future I’ll do my own e-books. I know there are interesting things that can be done with those. Or have podcasts and readings of my books. But for now I’ll stick to paper – I use it on both sides, but I still spend lots of euros on cartridges. Better that than my eyes…

I know e-books are not simply PDFs like the ones I put on Lulu, so I’ll have to study a little more before I actually do one. Maybe when Silvery Earth is universally known and I find a younger person who can help me with the tricks of technology… we’ll see! 🙂
