Sunday Surprise

Covers rebranding! So, uploading the first novella by former pen name with new cover. Here is the comparison between the two.

It was the first title with another pen name I uploaded way back in 2011 – the original short story, that is. The following year I put up the expanded version with the new cover (cover picture by Mary R. Vogt @ Morguefile).

BoF2015_resizeThis year I reformatted it and changed the pen name and the cover… And lowered the price. Only 2,99$ now.

I will do the same for most of that pen-name titles (the body switches have the same cover, but then they had better cover and were “best sellers”, while these other titles sold nothing or only a couple of copies).

I’ll be working on more covers this weekend, to save on some expenses. I have a couple of Star Minds Interregnum covers to work on, plus the cover of a novella I sent to Writers of the Future. Experiments with digital painting, still trying to learn that damn Photoshop! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Have a great Sunday! ๐Ÿ˜€

And the publisher’s page is up! There’s still some work to do, but well… this weekend, I guess I’ll be busy again. Writing, hopefully drawing and completing what I need to complete on the web page – probably “cleaning” this blog as well. Some of those pages up there will simply link to Unicorn Productions page!

And I’ll take off the widget for the newsletter subscription on this blog. I’ll send an email to the two people who signed up so far to tell them to do it again on the publisher’s page. Of course for news and other crazy stuff, you can always come here, but if you’re a reader and you don’t care about things unrelated to my books, you can migrate there and be updated only on new releases or what I’m working on.

I won’t post regularly there, since this year I don’t have a regular publishing schedule. That’s why I haven’t set up anything on Patreon yet either. Too busy with redrafting and expanding and writing new stuff. And submitting, so until I know if stories are accepted or rejected, I can’t publish them. Sigh.

I have mentioned a cover rebranding. The wonderful artist Marta Baroni is working on the second batch (that includes the titles of the discarded pen name), but in the meantime you can see what great job she did with the Italian titles. Unfortunately I’m having trouble on Kobo with a couple of titles, if they don’t solve the issue by the end of the week, I’ll send those two titles via Smashwords.

A special thank to Silvano, who besides being a great artist is also a wonderful web designer! ๐Ÿ™‚ And the WordPress software, of course. If I had to study HTML to start a web page, I’d never do it! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Back to work on Rajveer… I already added 6000words and haven’t even started on the new ending… my dear betas won’t recognize it when it comes out! ๐Ÿ˜€

Have a great weekend! ๐Ÿ™‚

Random Friday

I guess I’m going to ramble on Lucca Comics – even worse than last year, since there was the sun shining, so on Saturday you couldn’t walk anywhere and the little town was packed. Luckily I had done everything I needed to do on Friday, when it was less crowded. This time I bought the tickets online, so there was no line to get the bracelet to enter the various places, but they had put stuff everywhere, so it was really hard to find a non-crowded street anywhere.

The only reasons I went back (I had no intention after last year’s experience) were I needed to meet Maurizio Manzieri (guest of honor) and the cover artist for Male Lovers, who had two yaoi comics out (you can find the English versions here). And she did a pencil drawing for me, see (and I got the card with her character as well – I never have enough of that kind of men!)?

LauraWendigo_resizeI think you can still order both even if it says only until Nov.3 – I forgot I had to pre-order before then, we’ll see if I get it anyway… Why do I want the English version when I have the Italian one? Because I like that gal and I want to support her! ๐Ÿ˜€ Now I really really should sign up for Patreon and start supporting her regularly… okay, that’s a New Year Resolution! ๐Ÿ˜€

Now, quick announcement. If you missed Wyrd Worlds and would like to be part of another free anthology, check this call for speculative fiction autors – no pay, free book, exposure, that’s all there is. Much like for Wyrd Worlds. I’ll probably contribute something, but I don’t know what yet. And then I’ll invite the fellow contributors on this blog, so stay tuned! ๐Ÿ™‚

So, that’s all for today. I still have a pile of DVDs to watch, but I’m too busy writing that Star Minds Next Generation. Hopefully next week I’ll start! ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a great weekend!

Random Friday

Total randomness today. First, here’s what my sister-in-law is working on at the moment. You can see her at the end of the slideshow. Yes, I’m sure we could take greater care of our monuments, but I’m not too fond of roman ruins! ๐Ÿ˜‰ That’s just me, though…

I tried a sample of a book – I shall get back to it some day (when my TBR list goes down). But from the sample I can already recommend it: Managing Your Inner Artist / Writer: Strategies for Success. If you have writers’ block or other problems, go and check it. Again, the sample will be enough to tell you if it’s for you or not.

He should have been nominated for a Hugo, but well… maybe next year. It’s official, though: Maurizio Manzieri will be at Loncon. If you’re there, don’t forget to check him in the Artist Alley! ๐Ÿ™‚ The program is still in flux, so I don’t know if and when I’ll have panels… but I’ll most certainly stop there at some point! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Also, if you write SFF and would like to be featured on Duane’s blog like me, here’s the GR thread… He wants more, so go ahead! ๐Ÿ™‚ And stay tuned for his interview… Also, I saw this a little too late to send in my pic, but since it’s still ongoing… for those of you who have Twitter, share it #weneeddiversebooks – I posted the link on my Facebook page yesterday…

If you’d like to support a bright, colorful italianย graphic novel project, here’s the link to the crowdfunding request byย Emanuele Tenderiniย andย Linda Cavallini, authors of many titles previously published by names such as Sergio Bonelli, Delcourt, Ankama, Mondadori, Hachette, Les Humanoรฏdes associรฉs, DeAgostini, Panini.

Lots of random randomness, I know. Sorry, but DayJob is killing me and I have the attention span of a chihuahua. Looking forward to my 2-weeks break from the 10th of May. Have a wonderful weekend!

Random Friday

Sort of Art Friday, except it’s not my art but for these two vignettes that sum up Torino Comics.

ToComics1_resizeToComics2_resizeI was very happy to be able to talk to Cinzia Di Felice, Silvano Beltramo and Maurizio Manzieri for future commissions. They are all quite different artists, but that’s what I like about them! ๐Ÿ™‚

I met Cinzia in Angoulรจme way back in 2004 and bought her BDs in French… then for a few years she’d stopped drawing, so I had given up on her. Suddenly last year she was guest at the French BD bookshop in Rome, L’Aventure, and it was great to see she’d gone back to drawing! ๐Ÿ˜€ I was very happy to hire her for a Silvery Earth cover of future publication…

Silvano was among the organizers of Torino Comics – until this year. So I’ve known him for 3 or 4 years, and started hiring him for Star Minds. The only English cover is SMS – Women, but he did the Italian covers of Shooting Star and Mind Link. Iย  will let him redo the CVE covers and will proably do a new CreateSpace POD edition, just in case I start selling paper books. His historical comic Nidus Haereticorum will soon come out in English, and I’ll make sure to share the link – I got meself the Italian copy, signed by the artist at the comicon! ๐Ÿ™‚

As for Maurizio, I also met him at Torino Comics, probably about the same time as Silvano. I’m honored to hire a Spectrum illustrator to do my humble covers, but I’m sure he’ll do a great job for Star Minds Next Generation. And we’ll be together at Loncon, so watch out in case we do a panel together – or just say hello if you see us wandering through the world con! ๐Ÿ˜‰

And I celebrated 20 years of knowing Manf, a former ziner like me that I met at Umbria Fumetto way back in 1994 who is now a teacher at the Torino Comics School and a publisher as well! ๐Ÿ™‚ We couldn’t believe 20 years have gone by as we reminesced and talked about old friends and where they are now… I might not be very far in my comic career, but then – I’m a writer, and hobbyist artist! ๐Ÿ™‚

So, it was tyring, but I was happy. I also discussed other ideas and projects that I have with my Jedi Twin Fulvio, who might eventually help me produce what I have in mind. Although I might do a first attempt on my own. Now I need to get back to that priority list – or give up DayJob to have more time to follow all my projects! ๐Ÿ˜€ Except I don’t sell enough yet, so the only thing I can do is write and publish more, and then we’ll see…

Have a great weekend! ๐Ÿ™‚

Random Friday

So, it’s official, even WordPress says so: 200followersI won’t repost the poll for the late-comers, if you want, just scroll down and vote. Sunday I will reveal what you’ll get. And because it’s a Surprise, I’m not saying more at this time – I already spoiled half of it! ๐Ÿ˜‰ But maybe you were wondering when I’d post something about that poll, so now you know, tune back on Sunday.

By the way, thanks to the old and new visitors, March had as many visits as January (February had slightly less, due to the shorter month). Thank you for stopping by. Or subscribing to this blog. For whatever reason brings you.

If you’re on Goodreads, you might be panicking right now, because of the Amazon/Goodreads deal. I know at least 3 of my GR groups are fretting about the changes this would bring to GR and whatnot. I think it’s early to panic. Like David Gaughran said, Amazon bought Shelfari and IMDB and didn’t really change them. Even Hugh Howey thinks it’s a good thing for both readers and writers.

Personally, I use Goodreads more as a reader (even if I’m a GR Author and Librarian), and sometimes I do reviews on GR and not anywhere else, because GR allows you to edit your review, while Smashwords (for example) doesn’t. So especially if it’s an indie author (again, if I can give him/her at least 3 stars, otherwise I won’t add it to my books) I might review it only on GR, so I can revise my review if the author uploads a new version of his e-book.

As for Amazon, it has 9 different sites that don’t seem to talk to each other, so unless I’m sure the author is American and would love a review on, I won’t bother. I try to review everything I buy on Smashwords because there’s that friendly reminder to leave a review – but again, if I feel I want to be able to change my review, I won’t do it and ignore the prompt.

And for whoever wonders what’s Apple doing while Amazon buys Goodreads… well, it’s teaming with DeviantART. First the musicians, now the artists… Apple is gobbling another kind of creative people. The Zon wants books, Apple gets everything else! We’ll see if that feature really works. At the moment I have uploaded Fleur de Lys 1, but only on DriveThruComics as usual, as I didn’t like the preview on KDP, so I gave up trying to put it on other sites. But I do want to expand my comics distribution, so I’ll keep an eye on DA/Madfire Motion Books (whatever that means).

Some fun with vintage social networking, which incidentally goes very well with Joe Konrath’s post about Obsolete Anonymous! ๐Ÿ™‚ I must admit I still have lots of those vintage social networking and obsolete anonymous (namely, LPs, 45s, CDs and even VHS I can’t watch because the VCR is broken, LOL!)… but then, I’m a known technophobe and luddite for many things! ๐Ÿ˜€ Handwriting anyone? Why do schools still bother to teach children handwriting when they’ll move to keyboards and touch screens as soon as they can? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Oh, and if you’re a lonely artist looking for your soul mate (I’m not, I like being lonely – but then, I’m mostly a writer and a lone wolf, haha), you can now join DeviantHeart… I wish they did a matching site for writers/artists, not soulmates. Although I’m tired to fight with artists who first say they want to work with me and then change their minds. I’m only a half-artist, so how can I understand them? Sigh…

Comics weekend

I’m back from another edition of Torino Comics where an old friend of mine said he is interested in issuing my comics and graphic novels for the i-Pad. I won’t say more until I see the contract, but apparently the i-Pad with its color screen is the only e-reader good for comics and graphic novels at the moment. So now I wonder if I should save to buy and i-Pad or but that Kindle and wait for the i-Pad to lower its price. Sigh.

Again I met new artists and old friends: Maurizio Manzieri was off duty, but he showed me is latest works on his… i-Pad! The Photoshop Wizard wasn’t the only artist with one of those… I guess being also an artist I should… Aaaw, we’ll see! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I chatted with Stefano Frassetti who did this neat little drawing for me (because I put the sheet back up, mostly, as it had half fallen under his eyes).

I couldn’t buy his comic, but I’ve added it to my FB favorites and found he as an English website as well, so you might want to check him out.

Don Rosa was guest of honor and I helped the interpreter who was also called Barbara. I also signed up for a drawing at 11am on Saturday, I was #68 and got it around 4 or 5pm. Here it is, but it’s not for me, hence I cut off the dedication because it’s a surprise for a friend (and the gray marks stand for blue marker.

Now back to last week and catching up; the awesome Joleene Naylor has given me another award for this blog. Ain’t it cool? Rules:

1) display the award in a post (see end of the rules

2) list five things about myself, and four must be bold-faced lies. I’m not the best of liars, but I’ll do what I can to squeeze a stranger than fiction truth in the midst

3) must pass on this awesomely, prestigious award to 5 deserving bloggers

So, which of these things is the one and only truth, and which are the lies:

1) my dream/goal is to write in every conceivable genre, including poetry, using dozens of pen-names.

2) I’m addicted to anything trendy, either drink, drug or the latest gadjet, AND a fashionista, of course.

3) my house is also known as The House of the Unicorn for my awesome collection of the mythical animal in all forms, shapes and sizes (puzzles, plates, statuettes, stickers, stationery, pens…).

4) I am so fond of furry animals my house is full of them.

5) I’ll marry Keanu Reeves as the world falls down (with the David Bowie song and Labyrinth video playing in the background, of course!)

Now, to pass on this awesome award to five wonderful bloggers:

1) the Great Hema and her witty posts @ Wading through words

2) the Wonderful Janna and her inspiring posts @ Janna T Writes

3) the Amazing Melissa and her lovely stories @ The Undeveloped Story

4) the Happily Happy Seph and his House of Happy @, well, House of Happy, of course! (maybe he can squeeze it at the letter M when he reaches it! ;-))

5) the Mighty Biker Mickey and his daily posts @ The Prodigal Scribe

Display with pride! Jumping kitten and all! ๐Ÿ˜‰
