The Year of the Sloth

After boasting how fast I am with writing, I will now stop and think. It’s mid-January, I have daily posts including Sundays (skipped last year), and I don’t seem to be able to do it like I did.

I mean, last year I scheduled all the week’s posts during the weekend, except the links collection which had to be done at the end of the week. I programmed almost the whole month in advance with things I had to say.

This year I can’t even write my Love-story with… (and I already have a long list) much in advance! I’m writing this some 22 hours before it goes live, what happened to my scheduling habits?

I know, I’veΒ  become a sloth. Even in real life, what used to take me 5 minutes now takes me 50 minutes or 5 hours. Is it age, or is the world spinning faster? 😦

I need a lot more sleep. I need more priority lists because I fall behind on my own deadlines (something unheard of until now!). I can’t think ahead for more than a month or two (and I used to have 5-year career plans – gladΒ  I wrote them down while I still could! ;-)). And I decided it’s the year of (self) publication! Am I adjusting to the “speed” of copy-editor and cover artist who slow me down?

Ah, well, welcome to the Year of the Sloth. Maybe I feel like this only because I’m online and things go so fast on the internet, they can only leave you dizzy.

I guess I was lucky to grow up without this distracting technology. I didn’t have to do extra drawings for book trailers, extra formatting to upload works –Β heck, most of the time I didn’t even bother using a manual typewriter! πŸ˜‰ I still have dozens of handwritten notebooks filled with old 1980s (and some 1990s) stories… One day I’ll find the time to rewrite them, I swear!

Miss Sloth (yours truly) is now going back to work… Jessamine book trailer, color&lettering on SKYBAND 5 (that’s the artist’s job) AND I DID start “The Fern and the Cross”, while revising the Books of the Immortals (that’s the writer)! πŸ˜€ I’m a sloth who works on 3 projects at the same time… used to be 5? Ah, well, you can’t be this productive forever!

Happy writing!

UPDATE! With usual sloth-tiness (i.e. one day later), here’s Sleeping Barb!

  1. Dear Barb,
We all struggle from time to time with inertia, especially me and especially in the winter, I am amazed that you manage to do as much as you do but I have an idea for you. Why don’t you personify your sloth by creating one of your great little cartoons of you struggling with your ‘inner sloth’ (makes a great little mind picture for me anyway.)

Maybe it would encourage you if I remind you that I look forward to reading your posts and seeing your cartoon slot as I am sure many others do. Although I don’t write the same genre as you,(me being just a pesky poet from Pwllheli, I get extra points for alliteration πŸ˜‰ I enjoy your blog very much and I don’t follow many blogs because most of them don’t keep my interest long so blog on my friend. Blog on.

    • Dear Karen
I DID do a little cartoon of “Sleeping Barb”, but wasn’t too happy with it, so ended up not adding it to the post… I’m sooo bad at drawing animals anyway – and my only sloth-reference is Syd from Ice Age (who seems much more awake than myself)! πŸ˜‰
Well, maybe this afternoon I will scan/color/add the little drawing…
Thank you for reading me! πŸ˜€

  2. I’m noticing the same thing about myself. I used to schedule at least a week’s worth of posts every Sunday. Now I write them and throw them up whenever. No set schedule. No self imposed deadlines. I guess I’ve fallen into slothdom too. πŸ™‚

    • Welcome to Slothdom! πŸ˜€ We better enjoy our year without regrets… πŸ˜‰

  3. Barb,
I’ll beat you and be crowned the queen of slothdom:) I don’t think I ever mentioned it before but I love your Barb-drawings…and I don’t miss any of your “Happiness is…” quotes.
I have 3 incomplete projects that need about two weeks of my time…but I haven’t been able to motivate myself…I think there’s something about this year, which makes you lazy…

    • yes, it’s the Year of the Sloth, so take it easy! πŸ˜‰ We don’t want to get tired, do we? We DO need some rest, creating stuff is soooooooooooo tiring! πŸ˜€

  4. Same problems over here. Many things I want to blame, certainly the incessant need for lots of sleep being foremost among them, but ultimately it seems to come down to a need for better time management. Sometimes it’s best to slow down and smell the roses, though. πŸ˜‰ Enjoy the, errrr, winter blooms?
